Fixing the Lightbulb

In the scene where Hal is attempting to repair a light bulb in Malcolm in the Middle. An example of him struggling with the task and making a mess in the process. The scene starts with Hal attempting to turn on the light, but it won't turn on as the bulb is bad. He then tries to replace it,

  • opens the storage closet and the shelves break and fall.
  • Hal then tries to fix the shelves; he opens the tool drawer to get a screwdriver and notices the drawer squeaks when closing.
  • He reaches for the WD-40 to fix the squeaky drawer, but the spray can is empty.
  • He gets in the car to buy another can of WD-40, but the car won't start!

Next, his wife enters and asks if he changed the light bulb in the kitchen.

  • We see Hal under the car with the hood up, yelling "WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE I'M DOING!!"

The scene is a great example of how the show uses escalation of failed events to bring out the humor in ordinary situations, making the audience laugh.  It would be interesting to see this pattern of comic sequence used in a magic routine to create a comedy magic act.

For example, a magician attempts to vanish a red silk, but the following events occur:

The magician tries to make the silk disappear, but it falls out of his hand

He tries to use a magic wand, but it breaks

The magician attempts to fix the wand by using a rope to tighten it, but it turns out the rope is just a looped together without the ends

The magician attempts to cut the looped rope with scissors, but the scissors is broken. (Cut, no cut scissors)

The magician tries to use glue to fix the scissors, but it squirts out uncontrollably. (Tommy James Elmo's Squirting Glue Bottle)

Finally, the magician opens the glue to see what is going on inside, and the silk reappears in the glue bottle unexpectedly.

This sequence of failed events can be used to create a comedic magic act
