If we can walk through walls, we don't need to invent any illusions. An example of what is meant by restricting yourself is to be able to hand out the gimmicked props at the end of the trick and find a better way to perform the effect. To think inside the box! We know this goes against common belief, but in this instance, you need to think inside the box, not outside of it. To think inside the box means to narrow down and focus on a goal. For example, NASA had a problem with three astronauts in space and their oxygen supply was broken, and they were going to die if they didn't fix it. They were stuck out in space. What do you do?
Well, rocket scientists can come up with all sorts of ideas, millions of ideas, but that isn't what they needed. They needed one good idea that would work. So, being the brilliant rocket scientists they are, they gave themselves a box to think inside of and come up with an idea of how to fix the problem in space using only materials that were available within the spacecraft. And so, for these guys, creativity was important. Their lives depended on it.
For a magician, creativity allows you to work with what you currently have. Limit yourself as if the prop is like the oxygen tank and you need to make it examinable to the audience, even though it is gimmicked. Creativity is not some sort of rare magic, but it can be used to make one, it is an infinite resource. Wonder and ask questions. Start asking all sorts of questions, lots, and lots of questions. Like, how do we fix the oxygen thing on the spaceship? Well, there's the answer.
