Growing ball effect

Consider incorporating this optical illusion into another growing ball effect. One method that comes to mind is the sponge version; another is the Growing Ball Cabinet, popular in the 1990s. In that effect, a solid billiard ball is placed inside a handsome hardwood cabinet resting atop a turned wooden pedestal. Visibly—almost like watching a time-lapse—the ball gradually expands to many times its original size, and is then removed from the cabinet.

The flat optical illusion image can be used as a psychological setup for the effect. By first showing the illusion and explaining the phenomenon—perhaps offering a pseudo-scientific or physiological explanation—you prime the audience’s perception. This not only adds depth but makes the magical growth of the ball feel even more inexplicable.
